In this one, Neeson plays a cop-turned-PI who gets to make his own ethical choices as he chases down the murderers of his drug dealer client’s (Dan Stevens) wife. Schweighöfer also directs. Famed documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney (The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief) takes on the whistleblower haven Wikileaks and its infamous founder Julian Assange in this 2013 movie. “Unfolding like an espionage thriller but with a methodical journalistic skill at organizing a mountain of facts,” The Hollywood Reporter review says, “the film raises stimulating questions about transparency and freedom of information in a world in which governments and corporations have plenty to hide.” Hypnotherapy isn’t quite the life fix that a woman fresh off of a breakup wants in this new Netflix thriller. Hypnotic stars horror mainstay Kate Seigel as Jenn, a new patient of the dangerously charismatic Dr. Meade (Jason Mara). When Jenn starts losing chunks of time, she begins to question what exactly Dr. Meade may be compelling her to do in her hypnotized state. The thriller centers on an assassin who’s just ingested a poison with a 24-hour delay, so she has one day to identify and take out her killers. And with nothing to lose, she will stop at nothing to do so. The sequels may not live up to the original, but it’ll please the completists among you that every Jaws movie is now available to stream on Netflix. You can have a weekend marathon of all four films—Jaws, Jaws 2, Jaws 3, and Jaws: The Revenge—or just skip around to your favorites. This new documentary feature, which just hit Netflix, looks back on the close friendship between its two subjects, as well as the rift that ended up separating them. Included are not just interviews with scholars and activists who’ve studied the impact of Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali but also sit-downs with individuals who knew or were even related to the men. There are differing accounts as to why they eventually fell out (and many factors at play in general), but, as Sheila O’Malley’s review on RogerEbert.com notes, it was their differences that made their relationship so singular. “They both stood as bold examples of what a free mind looked like, what a free mind could do,” she writes.ae0fcc31ae342fd3a1346ebb1f342fcb For more recommendations sent right to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter. In Netflix’s new fantasy film Nightbooks, Jessica Jones star Krysten Ritter takes a villainous turn as Natacha, a witch who kidnaps a young horror fan named Alex (Winslow Fegley). She demands that he pen a new terrifying tale for her every night, with the alternative being a prospect that may be a bit too scary for pint-sized viewers. Then again, it’s based on the 2018 book of the same name, which was also geared towards kids, so perhaps your brave little ones can handle it. A father (Adrian Titieni) takes it upon himself to use his intelligence training and contacts to track down his son when he goes missing in a remote and unforgiving landscape in this 2021 Romanian/Swedish drama. Aquaman star Jason Momoa does his best Liam Neeson in this new action flick, playing a widower who’s out for revenge on the men who killed his ex-wife. Isabela Merced co-stars as his daughter, the only family he has left. Felicity Jones and the late Anton Yelchin are a young, long-distance couple in this almost entirely improvised romantic drama. The Guardian called the 2011 indie a “low-key, unassumingly intelligent movie about romance and bad timing.” In the German thriller Black Island, a teenager’s (Philip Froissant) peaceful existence is disrupted by the arrival of a teacher (Alice Dwyer) who takes an inappropriate interest in him. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg regarding what’s wrong on the island of the title—there are many more sinister secrets to uncover. Elizabeth Banks and James Marsden lead the 2014 comedy Walk of Shame, in which a newscaster runs into all kinds of shenanigans and hijinks trying to make it home after a one-night stand. We’ll level with you: it only has a 12 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but if you’re a fan of the Pitch Perfect star and comfortingly generic humor, then it may be good enough for a Saturday night stream.ae0fcc31ae342fd3a1346ebb1f342fcb For more recommendations sent right to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter. Tenet star and Denzel Washington’s son, John David Washington, stars in this Netflix original thriller. He plays an American tourist in Greece, who ends up on the run from some unsavory characters after an accident that kills his girlfriend. Why? That answer is slowly revealed as he tries to make it to safety in the form of the American Embassy. It’s time for Netflix to bring this teen-focused rom-com trilogy to an end. Joey King reprises her role of Elle, who’s (still) caught between her best friend (Joel Courtney) and her reformed bad-boy boyfriend (Jacob Elordi). In this final installment, she has to decide which college—and therefore which man in her life—she’s choosing. Like your documentaries with a lot of left turns and “a-ha!” moments? Then you have to add Misha and the Wolves to your queue. The film revolves around Misha Defonseca, whose account of surviving the Holocaust involves taking shelter with a pack of wolves and led to a celebrated memoir and movie deal. But when her publisher became suspicious of her claims, many of them didn’t hold up to that scrutiny. And that’s only the beginning of the story. The new Netflix original The Last Letter From Your Lover stars Felicity Jones as a present-day journalist who becomes fascinated by a series of love letters detailing the affair between a married woman (Shailene Woodley) and a reporter (Callum Turner) doing a story on her husband in the ’60s. As she follows their story, the passion in the letters starts to bleed into her on life. We’ve got four words for you: vampires on a plane. The horror-thriller Blood Red Sky will add a new level of terror for anyone who’s already afraid of flying, though, to be perfectly fair, the bloodsucker is kind of the hero in this scenario. The movie follows a single mom (Peri Baumeister) who transforms into her secret self to battle the terrorists who’ve hijacked her flight. This animated adventure is the culmination of several animated series that are also on Netflix and are all created by The Shape of Water director Guillermo del Toro. The universe is called Tales of Arcadia and is about the fantasy creatures living right under the nose of the regular human citizens of a small town. Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans serves as the feature-length finale. Yep, that’s right: all five Twilight movies are now right at every Netflix subscriber’s fingertips. Relive the phenomenon that begins with a normal teenager girl (Kristen Stewart) learning that the mysterious hunk at her high school (Robert Pattinson) is actually an immortal creature of the night and ends with…well, if you somehow don’t know all the wild twists and turns this series takes, we won’t spoil them for you here. The new Fear Street trilogy ends here—and the earliest point in its chronology. 1666 tracks the local curse that’s led to a fantastic amount of teen bloodshed in the two previous movies (1994 and 1978, both also on Netflix) back to its origins: the trial of a witch. Produced in part by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, the documentary This Changes Everything attempts to distill and explain the sexism that’s still rampant in the film industry and how it manifests. No lesser names than Meryl Streep, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, Taraji P. Henson, and Geena Davis herself weigh in with their experiences, and there’s plenty of interesting (and infuriating) history and expert analysis as well.ae0fcc31ae342fd3a1346ebb1f342fcb Karen Gillan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe plays a young assassin who was born into the business but no longer has a relationship with her assassin mother (Lena Headey).
